26 June 2014, 12:00

From 25 June to 4 July classes of the Vladislav Tretiak International School of Goaltending are held in Riga. Master classes for young goaltenders under the guidance of the Russian and world sport star will take place in the capital of Latvia for the fifth time, traditionally with the support of Rietumu Bank.

The outstanding Russian hockey-player and trainer Vladislav Tretiak is also internationally recognised as an authoritative public figure who applies a lot of efforts in the development of children and youth sport. For a number of years he has been organising professional master classes for starting goaltenders from the whole world, where they can train practical skills and receive valuable advices.

In recent years, Riga has become the centre for such training, where Vladislav Tretiak holds classes of the International School of Goaltending every summer jointly with well-known Latvian hockey-players Sergey Naumov and Andrejs Zagars.

“Riga has always been occupying a rightful place in the hockey world and in recent years it has also become an important centre for the training of young sportsmen,” says the Member of the Council of Rietumu Bank Alexander Gafin, “We highly value the cooperation with Vladislav Tretiak who is a truly unique person, being not only a famous hockey-player but also a sports diplomat who does a lot for developing international sporting ties and bringing people together. He possesses the best qualities of a good trainer – a penetrating mind, simplicity, openness and an ability to easily establish contact with people. We are looking forward to seeing Vladislav Tretiak in Latvia, where he is very much respected and loved, and we will be glad to have the opportunity of congratulating him on his re-election for the position of the President of the Ice Hockey Federation of Russia.”

The participants of this sports camp are over 50 young hockey-players from Latvia, Russia, Belarus, Lithuania, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Japan and Spain. Many of them are arriving for training from Vladislav Tretiak in Riga repeatedly. Some trainees of the school have already signed contracts with clubs of the Youth Hockey League and are professionally engaged in hockey.

“It is very important to see a positive example for young guys who love sport and evaluate the possibility of choosing it as their life’s main business. Not only is good professional training required, but also a possibility to personally communicate with authoritative people – the ones who can show and say what you lack and instil confidence in victory in you,” says one of the chief trainers of the School of Goaltending Andrejs Zagars.

Like in previous years, the boys participating in master classes will be divided into senior and junior groups and a special programme is prepared for each of them. Apart from training on ice, they will have “dry” training in a gym and open-air classes on the beach of Jurmala.

Vladislav Tretiak is an outstanding Soviet hockey-player, goaltender, a state and political figure. From 1969 to 1984 he was a goalkeeper of CSKA and the USSR national team. He has played at 482 hockey matches in the USSR Championships, 117 matches at World Championships and Olympic Games and 11 matches in the Canada Cup. The International Ice Hockey Federation has recognised Vladislav Tretiak as one of the greatest hockey-players of the 20 th century. He was the first European named in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto in 1997.

At present, Vladislav Tretiak is the President of the Ice Hockey Federation of Russia, member of the State Duma Committee for Physical Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs. In 2014 Vladislav Tretiak, together with an outstanding figure skater Irina Rodnina, lit the Olympic flame at the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.
