The Golden Mask Russian Performing Arts Festival Has Started in Riga

This prestigious festival is being held in the capital city and other cities of Latvia for the eighth time, traditionally with the support of Rietumu Bank.

During the week the Dailes theatre in Riga, as well as Ventspils and Liepaja, will be the venues for performances of four Russian theatres – prize winners and nominees of the Golden Mask Russian National Theatre Award.



The programme includes Russian and western drama classics, as well as staged plays by Russian writers of the 20 th century.

The festival opened in the Dailes theatre with a four hour long performance of the Anton Chekhov play “A Story Without a Title” by the Yaroslavl Drama Theatre which enjoyed big success with the sophisticated Riga audience.

Western drama will be represented by the Friedrich Schiller’s tragedy “Intrigue and Love” staged by the Saint Petersburg theatre “Maly Drama Theatre – Theatre de L’Europe”. Director Lev Dodin, cast – Kseniya Rappoport, Yelizaveta Boyarskaya, Danila Kozlovsky and other recognised Russian actors.

Other performances presented within the framework of the Golden Mask festival will be – “The Year When I Was Not Born” by the Moscow Theatre under the direction of Oleg Tabakov according to the play “The Wood Grouse’s Nest” by Victor Rozov and “The Mother’s Field” by the A. Pushkin Moscow Theatre according to the similarly-named story by Chingiz Aytmatov.

Events such as the Golden Mask festival not only give joy to all lovers of theatrical art, but also spiritually enrich our nations and bring them together. Therefore, every year Rietumu Bank supports this event which is worthy in every sense of the word,” says Alexander Pankov, President of Rietumu Bank.

The Golden Mask in Latvia festival is included in the cultural exchange interstate programme between the Ministries of Culture of Latvia and Russia and is one of the biggest cultural-humanitarian projects of the two countries. It is also supported by the Union of Theatre Workers of Russia, municipalities of Riga, Ventspils and Liepaja, and the Latvian Cultural Capital Foundation.
