Golden Mask is Starting, Rietumu Bank Provides Their Support!

8 October 2018, 11:40

Rietumu Bank is invariably the general partner of this big international project.

The current festival will be held in view of the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of independence of the Republic of Latvia. For this date, the festival organisers have prepared a special programme, the major event of which will be the arrival of the Bolshoi Ballet (Moscow) – such a tour is arranged in Latvia for the first time in the last 40 years.

On the stage of the National Opera, spectators will be able to see "The Taming of the Shrew" performed by principal dancers and artists of the Bolshoi Theatre, staged by the recognised French choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot, with the music composed by Dmitri Shostakovich.

According to Arkady Suharenko, Deputy Chairman of the Rietumu Bank Council, “It is very pleasing that the Golden Mask retains its high level from year to year. As the interest in scenic art remains high in Latvia, the festival not only has its loyal spectators, but also attracts and educates new theatre fans with every season.”

Special attention should go to the stage production of the Sophocles tragedy “Oedipus Rex” – a joint work of the Vakhtangov Theatre from Moscow and the National Theatre of Greece. The performance, which became the hit of the Moscow theatrical season, is included in the list of the Golden Mask nominees in the following categories: “Drama/ Best Large Scale Production”, “Drama/ Best Director” and “Drama/ Best Designer”.

The festival programme also includes the legendary “Shukshin’s Stories” by the Theatre of Nations, staged a few years ago by the director from Latvia Alvis Hermanis, as well as the performance “Our Class”, where young actors of the Vakhtangov Theatre are engaged, and the performance by the Mayakovsky Theatre “A Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat”.

The festival is traditionally held in Riga, Liepaja and Ventspils.

The full programme of the festival may be found on the website http://www.goldenmask.lv/lv/
