With the Support of Rietumu Bank, the World Jazz Festival Will Be Held Again in Riga

13 July 2017, 16:31

The festival will be held in the capital of Latvia for the fourth time. The invariable partner of this event is Rietumu Bank.

Over two days, three superb concerts will take place. On 27 July, according to the established tradition, the festival will be opened with an open-air concert in the heart of the Old Town – in Dome Square. The same evening, there will be a performance from the world jazz stars in the famous Splendid Palace hall.

Like before, guests of the festival will enjoy performances from both foreign stars of world jazz and Latvian musicians.

This year, meeting numerous requests from spectators, the organisers of the festival have invited the young and phenomenally talented jazz musician Oleg Akkuratov to give a performance in Splendid Palace. This world class musician has already won the hearts of listeners worldwide, and Riga is no exception. Last year, among other things, he surprised listeners by performing the famous Latvian folk song “Kur tu teci, gailīti mans” in Latvian.

One of the brightest and the most recognised American jazz stars Patti Austin will also perform in Splendid Palace. The talented singer is a Grammy Award winner and has recorded 17 solo albums in different musical genres. Patti often takes part in Grammy and Oscar official ceremonies. At the concert in Riga, she will sing accompanied by one of the organisers of the festival, the legendary saxophonist Igor Butman, as well as the Moscow Jazz Orchestra. The musicians have prepared a special musical programme for this concert, devoted to the 100th anniversary of Ella Fitzerald.

The following day, on 28 July, a big concert will be held in the Arena Riga Hall. There, one of the most popular artists of Europe will perform - Italian soul-singer Mario Biondi, who has a haunting voice which leaves nobody unmoved. In Riga, the musician will perform songs from his new album, as well as our favourite world hits.

He will be accompanied by the Grammy Award winner John Scofield – one of the leading modern jazz guitarists. This year, he received two out of three Grammy Awards - for his album of jazz versions of country classics and for the best jazz solo.
